Vaping is the act of producing vapor that is meant to be inhaled, usually flavored and containing nicotine. The vapor is created from vaporizers also commonly known as vapes, vape pens or vape kits, which use a battery to charge a coil that heats up your vape juice to create the vapor. It mimics the traditional cigarette smoking method and because of this, it’s one of the most popular ways for people to quit smoking in recent years.

Start with simple and easy to use devices… that does not mean they are inferior. These devices are widely available in stores and come with ready to use features. To properly use your device, you should first understand how it works.  Vaping may appear intimidating or even overwhelming to people who’re just starting, but with some helpful tips, you get to know how it is done properly and with no time find yourself doing it like a pro.

1. Choose the Right E-liquid.

E-liquid, or e-juice, is what goes into the e-cigarette to create the vapor. Currently, there are 2 common carrier liquids: propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin(VG).

  • Propylene glycol is a thin, odorless, colorless liquid that is effective at carrying flavors. It is the most common fluid used to suspend flavors and nicotine. Some users claim PG provides a sensation most similar to smoking tobacco.
  • Vegetable glycerin is a derivative of vegetable oil and is vegetarian friendly. It is a thicker liquid that has some natural sweetness and produces a much smoother vapor. Due to its thickness, vaping high VG liquids can clog coils faster and reduce the life of some atomizers.
  • VG and PG can be used on their own or mixed. Experimenting with ratios and finding the right mix for you will provide the most rewarding experience. Try buying different mixes from your local vape shop to see what you like best.
  • Flavor and nicotine strength can also be changed using e-liquid. Try a higher PG percentage for a stronger flavor, and higher VG percentage for more vapor.

2. Decide on Your Nicotine Strength.

Vaping allows you greater control over how much nicotine you get, and your choice in e-liquid and smoking device will help determine how much nicotine you want. E-liquid nicotine is measured in mg/ml, and different amounts provide different experiences. Keep in mind, though, that increased nicotine levels may present an increased health risk.

  • 0mg/ml means there is no nicotine in the liquid. It can be used to get a fuller flavor, and to satisfy residual habits of those who have quit smoking. It also provides a safer way for people who have never smoked to vape ‘for fun’.
  • 3mg/ml to 6mg/ml is a light level generally used by light to moderate smokers, or people who want some nicotine but more flavor from their liquid. 3 mg/ml is generally preferred for systems with rebuildable atomizers.
  • 12mg/ml to 18mg/ml is a level generally comfortable for heavy smokers. It provides more nicotine and is preferred by those using a cartomizer.
  • Levels above 18mg/ml are available, but it is advisable to stay away from those unless you cannot satisfy a nicotine addiction with lower levels. It is always easier to start lower and increase than to start with too strong a liquid.

3. Inhaling

Inhaling seems like a weird thing to have to consider when using a vape kit, but how you inhale your vape will have a big impact on how it works for you. When you first open your vape kit, ensure you have followed the instructions on how to set it up. With a closed system cigarlike, this should be very straightforward. Ensure the battery is fully charged. Once this battery is charged and ready to go, attach one of the pre-filled refills to the battery and then hold your device on a downward 45° angle, place it in your mouth and slowly inhale. We recommend inhaling a small amount of vapor to start. If you feel it was not quite enough, try inhaling a little longer. Learning to inhale you vape may take a bit of trial and error but eventually you will find the best amount to suit you.

Drawing too much vapor in the first instance may make you cough as you are not used to how much vapor the device may produce. Don’t be discouraged. Keep trying until it works for you.

Typically, we recommend 5 to 7 slow and longer draws with a pause between each inhale, should give you the same sensation as smoking a real cigarette. Many people find that if they hold the vapor in their lungs for a few extra seconds compared to a cigarette they absorb the right amount of nicotine. There is no right way to inhale the vapor. There is only what works for you. Experiment with techniques, and you will discover what best suits your needs.

Never risk the use of a non-reputable vape pen or e-juice. Always buy quality products that won’t break down or fail on you. If you have a disposable device, this won’t apply. But if you have a rechargeable kit, wash the tank and mouthpiece with warm water at least once a week, and let it air dry. Never share your vaporizer. Whether it’s a vaporizer or an e-cigarette, sharing a device puts you at risk of contracting diseases. Always learn to do things in your own way. Choose which vaping method is your favorite, which e-juice is your best, or which vape works best for you. Thanks for checking out our guide to vaping!
